The Secret To Making SHŌJŌ Tonics Taste So Delicious

Taste and flavour are important when it comes to humans accepting food and drinks.

It is believed that some of your taste preferences are innate from the moment you are born. Sweet taste is categorised as the first taste preference for infants, and this is proposed as a ‘product of survival’, with most poisonous substances having a bitter taste and therefore rejected in favour of the sweetness of breastmilk and fruits.

The problem with a preference with sweet taste, is the link to sugar. We know that having a diet low in added sugar is important as part of a healthy eating pattern and is linked with less risk for tooth decay and excess body weight.

Sugars can be called many names and are naturally present in a wide range of foods as well as being added to foods.

Natural (or 'intrinsic') sugars are found in whole, unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, honey and some grains.

However, just because a sugar is 'natural' doesn't always make it a healthy choice.

The World Health Organization classifies natural sugars such as honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit juice concentrates as 'free sugars' and these should be limited to less than 10% of your total daily diet. For the average adult consuming 8700kJ/day that equates to 51g or 13 teaspoons.

To ensure we hit the ‘sweet’ spot with our SHŌJŌ Tonics, we kept specific fruit concentrates low and added Erythritol (968), as a nutritive sweetener. Often called a ‘modified carbohydrate’, Erythritol provides no energy, does not change blood glucose levels and because it doesn’t react with oral bacteria is tooth-friendly compared with other sweeteners.

With only 1.3g sugar in 100ml of SHŌJŌ, it really does hit the ‘sweet spot’ for taste and your smile 😜
